University of Southampton Medicine Interview

Southampton assesses applicants on an in-person selection day with two scored parts: a panel interview of about 20 minutes with two or three interviewers, covering motivation, your personal statement and any research or audit; and a 20–30 minute group discussion task assessing teamwork, communication and how you present ideas. There is no online alternative — you must attend in person. Applicants are ranked to interview on UCAT alone.

Preparing for University of Southampton specifically

  • Practise group discussion tasks — contribute and build on others without dominating or going silent
  • Know your personal statement cold, including anything you can't immediately evidence
  • Be ready to talk in detail about any research or audit you mention

Common pitfalls here

  • Dominating or disappearing in the group task
  • A personal statement claim you can't back up in the panel
  • Assuming there is an online option — there isn't

How MMI scoring works

Each station is scored independently by its own interviewer, usually against three or four fixed domains — communication, problem-solving or initiative, and integrity or moral reasoning are the common ones. A weak station can't be rescued by a strong one, so consistency matters more than a single standout answer.
